Makeup Solutions to Minimize the Appearance of Graves Eye Disease

by Claire Rendulic

Diminish the look of graves eye disease with makeup. Use light and dark to create an optical illusion to make the eye appear smaller. On the top of the eye, use a mid to light lid color right to the top of the crease. Redraw a faded light crease blending down. Darken the corner with a half-moon. With foundation, use a half shade darker on the lower lid where the eye protrudes blend outwards. Use a half shade lighter around the orbital bone blend inwards. Create a prominent lip with bold color and add gloss.

I have sudden onset graves eye disease, waking up one morning to find my eyes bulging. The good news is the protruding eyes will improve over time. The bad news it won’t disappear. The inflammation will take about two to three years to go down. I have never been happier to be a makeup artist than at that moment in time. Adapting the makeup as I progressed through the stages as the swelling improved.

There is hope for you right now. You can improve your appearance and be beautiful. There are two positive outcomes, big eyes are always in fashion, and the fine lines under your eyes are gone. Once you reach the end of your journey, you will look years younger.

Ditch all color and shimmer eyeshadow in the beginning. Cool and warm browns are the way to go. You could try for natural corals and oranges, but anything else you will have to use with extreme care. If you need color in your life mix a little shadow with a light brown to soften the color making it easy to blend. Try and keep the color for your lips and nails.

Phase 1: You Have Flat Eyes, but Your Eyes Are Too Sensitive for Makeup

In addition to this makeup, you will derive the most benefit from accessory tips later in the article. I found this period the hardest as I learned to adjust to my new look. I tried many different treatments until I found the correct one for me. This period lasted about six months, and it was the most uncomfortable. I found improvement during this time, but everyone is unique and adjust to treatments. Trial and error – It takes two to three weeks before you know if a treatment is effective. If it isn’t, there are other options for you to choose from.

Makeup Suggestions for Daytime

If your eyes are too sensitive for mascara and eyeliner, there is nothing else for it, and you will have to skip them. Tint your lashes, use an eyelash curler to add shape.

Buy two-color foundations, mix until you achieve your skin tone, apply to your face. Add a half shade darker to your lids where your eyeball is protruding. Apply a half shade lighter along your cheek and orbital bone. Blend these closer until it disappears. Use your ring finger – it will give you a more accurate and softer application. A shade darker to create a false crease in your eye. Select coral or pink lipstick and blush. Suck in your cheeks and apply blush under the cheekbone. Create a prominent lip, with lipstick and lip gloss. This is about all you will be able to handle until you lose some of the sensitivity – Color brows and powder as normal.

Makeup Suggestions for Night-Time

Using the same basic day face, you will sweep shimmer along your cheekbone. Carefully highlight the area under the eyebrow with a tiny line of light shadow. Switch for a dark lipstick. If you can, run a darker shadow along your top lashes.

Phase 2: You Have Flat Eyes, and Now You Can Wear Makeup

I found treatments that minimized sensitivity. Changed a few lifestyle habits. The result was starting to show. I had to make changes to my treatment for both graves eye disease and thyroid disease. For the most part, I was settled and adjusting to my new life. This period lasted about eight months for me.

Makeup Suggestions for Daytime

These were the changes I made to the day makeup of sensitive eyes. I added a light brown lid color to the whole eye. One shade darker into the crease, from one side, fading it to the nose. You are lightly adding a ‘shadow’ where one used to be. Lined a thin line of eyeliner to the top lash line and mascara to the top lashes only. I had watery eyes, and if I did anything to the bottom lashes, I ended up having to wash it all off.

I kept my lips at the forefront but selected a shade a little darker and kept the gloss.

If I needed to be out and about. I went with a bold red and lip gloss. This draws all attention to your lips. To create the perfect red lip, here is a link to my bridal article.

Creating a Balanced Overall Look

The key to making this look successful is creating a complete look that compliments the makeup. Bohemian, beachy, and casual for every day. If you are in the corporate world, select power suits, and adopt a masculine look. A feminine statement piece of jewelry to draw attention to your lips and neck. For evenings I adopted plunging necklines and a Wonderbra. This was my heaviest size as I only embarked on a healthy lifestyle, and the pounds had yet to come off. I wanted to pull attention away from my eyes and my waist. It is important to keep your nails and hair immaculate to keep a groomed look.

Phase 3: You Have bulging Eyes and You Want to Make Them Beautiful

This phase crept up on me. I only realized it had happened after I saw photographs of myself during the initial phase of graves eye disease and noticed the change.

Makeup Suggestions for Daytime

This phase marks the beginning of the full-face makeup. I freshened up the sixty’s look. With prominent dark eyeliner, this will close your eye. I filled the entire lid with a light brown shade darker than my natural color. This will make your crease line around the eye flatten.

I adapted the sixty’s look by adding three colors to the lash line. The first a thin layer of black eyeliner. Blended it with charcoal shadow. I blended deep brown to the charcoal, and I used the same color for the crease line. A lighter shadow only blending it near the crease. Using the deep brown, I changed the position of my crease. Draw the first line at the lowest part of the crease and blended down. Only blending up to fade the line.

I changed my lips back to the lighter color I prefer. At this time, I accepted the bulging eyes, this has always been my preferred prominent feature. It will always be a prominent feature of my face now, and I embraced it. You can experiment with color on your lid now and move away from natural browns.

Makeup Suggestions for Night-Time

I kept to the same day look, only added a heavier eyeliner and mascara and lip gloss. This makeup pairs well with any look.

Phase 4: Your Eyes Have Receded and You Need a New Basic Makeup

Makeup Suggestions for Daytime

This time I enjoyed the most (thankfully because I am still in it). I am now able to wear eyeliner and mascara on my bottom eyelashes. I do the four-color eye technique to make my eyes pretty. A light lid color all over. Deeper lid color blended to my crease line. A darker half-moon from the corner of my eye blended through the crease. Eyeliner across my top lid and a lighter shadow along the bottom. The bottom lid shadow is the same color I use at the corner of my eye. And lighten the area just under the brow.

Makeup Suggestions for Night-Time

Darken the eyeliner. Draw a line under the bottom lash about a third of the way and blend a little past the center of the eye. Add a darker lipstick and lip gloss.

Many makeup artists will suggest black or brown eyeliner to the inner eye of the bottom lid. It will create a smaller eye; however, this will age you. I would only recommend this for those in their twenties. You can try a light brown, but I forgo this option.

This makeup pairs well with any look. Make it your own. This is still you only with bigger eyes.

Tips for Improving Symptomatic Problems

I find these symptoms vary depending on what type of day I am having, seasonal changes, and my stress levels. The best tip I have that improved all of the problems listed below I found by accident.

It was a bad day for my eyes, not being able to open the left one (this one gives me the most issues). My father, who is a boilermaker by trade, was visiting me. He asked me what was wrong with my eye. After explaining, he gave me an old welders trick to help with arc eyes. Apply a light amount of VapoRub on the orbital bone under the eyes. It burns at first but forces the eye to water naturally and is more comfortable. After I put on makeup or remove it, I apply some. After a couple of weeks, the swelling of my lids decreased.

If You Are Experiencing Red Eyes

Use a cool compress. You get eye gel packs to keep in the fridge. If you have yours in the freezer cover with a cloth to keep the pack from sticking to your lashes. Put it on your eyes and keep it there for twenty minutes. In a pinch, I used two slices of cucumber to my eyes. Add eye drops to your eyes. This will soothe the irritation.

You Have Developed Watery Eyes

You need to invest in waterproof mascara. You can spray hairspray onto your mascara wand it will keep it on for longer. Swop out the pencil for liquid or gel eyeliner.

You Have Puffy Eyelids

My puffy eyes were caused by water retention. I can’t explain it, I had water and dry eyes with water retention on the lids. The most effective was the VapoRub. Switch between a warm and cool compress over the eyes for twenty minutes. Swop application as one cools and the other warms. I have used tea bags and cucumbers for both. Now I use a warm cloth and gel pack if I need to.

Focus Attention on Other Parts of Your Body

Pull attention to another part of your body if you want to draw unwanted attention your eyes will create. Add accessories, long earrings will draw attention to your lips. A statement belt buckle will draw attention to your waist. People will notice this as you approach. Accentuate your lips, and people will focus on them when you interact with them.

You Are Beautiful

The onset of graves eye disease is a shock. If you are like me and have it in combination with thyroid disease, you are experiencing changes on all levels. I have changed four dress sizes, eye changes, and varying levels of discomfort. It took four years for the changes to settle. I have embraced the change. I get more compliments now about how beautiful my large eyes are then when I was 18 and a size 0. Embrace yourself.

Your eye health is important. See an Ophthalmologist. Eyes specialists who will develop a treatment stage for you. Surgery is often offered, but the results vary, manage your expectations. Do your own research on this matter. Take your unique circumstances into consideration. To protect the eye, some sufferers, have no option but to commence with surgery. Fortunately, I had other options. Invest in a good pair of sunglasses, prescription sunglasses, or transition lenses.

Speak to your doctor, endocrinologist, pharmacist, optometrist, and your ophthalmologist, until you find a treatment that works for you. They work in specialized fields, and each of them knows different treatments that could work. If any of these healthcare professionals do not want to try other options. Find new healthcare providers. I ended up changing all of them. You have a right to be happy with your service providers and be an active participant in your treatment.

Frequently Asked Question!

How Do I Protect My Eyelashes?

Hypothyroidism causes hair loss, and you need to protect your eyelashes. Add petroleum jelly to your lashes for a few minutes. Apply makeup remover allowing it to soak into the makeup. Be gentle as you remove your eyeliner and mascara.

What Do I Do, My Eyebrows Are Thinning?

Unless you die them, eyebrows have different shades.

Suffering from hypothyroidism you may experience loss of your outer brow. You need to draw them back using three shades of eyeliner. One lighter than your hair, another the same shade and the third a shade darker. These pencils need to be sharp.

Start with the lightest and draw the hairs back to the natural tip. Hold a ruler from the tip of your nose through the corner of your eye to find the end of your eyebrow. Add depth and texture with the other two pencils. Your eyebrows will look natural with lights and darks.

When Should I Do Permanent Makeup?

With the loss of brows, you may want to have them re-drawn. On a whole I do not like permanent makeup. Fashion changes and eyebrows are the first on that list.

If I had to select one, I would choose microblading. The therapist cuts small lines into the brow while pushing the ink in with the blade. Essentially drawing the hairs back. Adopt a natural shape and thickness but keep it groomed.

Consider what color you make your brows with makeup and select the color accordingly. If you keep your eyebrows tinted it will create a natural look when you are not wearing makeup. Remember it fades after five to ten years and does not wash off if you don’t like it.
